The artistic competition “Decolonizing Public Space – International Artistic Competition for the Colonial Monument Braunschweig” pursues the goal of a change of perspective in a decolonial culture of remembrance – after decades or centuries of reproduction of a culture of remembrance from a colonial and colonial racist perspective, victims and opponents of colonialism and exploitation should now receive attention and appreciation. By means of the artistic competition, a permanent artistic counter-narrative to the existing colonial monument in Jasperallee is to be created in the public space of the city of Braunschweig. The artistic design is to contribute to the discourse on decolonial issues and the associated critical reflection of German colonial history.
For this purpose, an independent jury of experts from the contemporary art and culture scene invited six international artists to submit designs in a multi-stage selection process. The versatile concepts will now be presented in a competition presentation from February 24 to April 11, 2023 at the Städtisches Museum. From all submissions the jury will select a design, which will be installed in public space in 2023/24.
